Turtles serve the purpose of being your ideal friends
Turtles are elegant creatures and can serve the purpose of being your ideal companions. You can well use your free time to wonder about the turtles, observing these little elegant creatures and trying to befriend them. Turtles, as compared to other reptiles or pets are much more interesting to observe and watch and they stand out amongst the others in a way that they require less attention and time from the keeper as they are not packed in furs that needs to be taken care of. The shores of South America have in store some of the best species of turtles that is the Red-eared sliders.
Red-eared sliders are acquainted with the warm weather as well as cold so they do not have the need to hibernate in the winters. This species mostly lives in fresh waters and is mainly herbivorous after they approach adulthood. Like most of the other animals, these turtles get their cues regarding when to hibernate and breed from the photoperiod. Also they are seen active during the day time, that is, they are diurnal.
The suitable environment for Red-eared sliders
Turtles are an easy going pet but their major drawback is not themselves, instead it is the environment they should be provided. A lot of supplies and equipments are required to keep these turtles fit and healthy and to make the environment suitable according to their needs. For this reason, red-eared sliders are mostly left with the animal shelters or worse, released in open ponds. And releasing this distinct species into the new environment can have a disturbing effect on the local ecosystem. This is mainly because of their hugeness as compared to the native turtles. When they are released they stand out in their abilities to grab food and find places for relaxation and accommodation. Beware, don’t go on its initial size as one day your little Red-eared slider will elapse into a huge turtle, if kept in a suitable environment, and you would require a large aquarium to cater to its needs!
Aquarium suitability for Red earned sliders
Turtles have the need to emerge out of the water to stretch out in order to thermo regulate. Also this process is vital to help prevent fungal infections caused by water surroundings and therefore, frequent drying is required. Consequently, the aquarium should be as such that it suits to the needs of the turtle. It should be spacious enough for a grown-up turtle to swim around freely and the dry area should be concrete enough to support its weight. Though this species is aquatic but they do require occasional relaxation on dry land.
